Introduction

Course Introduction:

In this course, learners will examine the process of communication and analyze the various nuances that can occur when this process breaks down. Additionally, learners will analyze the differences in formal vs informal communication as well as the differences between verbal and nonverbal communication. The course will wrap up with a discussion on the role of technology in communication and how best to convey a message in such a highly complex field as healthcare.

 

Course Objectives:

  1. Analyze the basic skills needed to effectively communicate with patients, staff, and families.
  2. Evaluate the differences between verbal and nonverbal communication
  3. Examine the principles of difficult conversations; how to have them and how to find accord after conflict.
  4. Describe the key components of both formal and informal communication.
  5. Assess the different methods of electronic communication.
